Hello January, and hello, 27!
Birthdays have always been my favourite events to celebrate. Whether it be my own, or a loved ones – I love seeing everyone feel loved on their birthday. Once a year, everyone gets to be the main character for the day, and I just love that! ◡̈
When I was younger, I always placed the responsibility of a great birthday on the people I was surrounded by. Expecting people to uphold some arbitrary, uncommunicated event that I seemed to have in my head. Of course, and rightfully so, this had led to years of disappointment and waves of loneliness. Since I’ve ventured my mid-20’s, this mindset has seemingly shifted, and I don’t need to depend on others for my happiness at all. My new mantra surrounding birthdays goes a bit like this: As an adult, it truly is your own responsibility to make your birthday special. For others who don’t celebrate birthdays (their own, or others), there shouldn’t be a requirement to actively participate – it’s okay for it to just be another day. Similarly, for those who do like celebrating, it is a joy to live through that small spark of happiness. So silly, us humans.
Some time ago, I told myself I would do all of the things I loved on my birthday, given there are only so many in a lifetime! One of these things was to travel. I’ve done New York, London, Paris, and Toronto before it was my home. This year, I decided to spend it with more loved ones, choosing Toronto after it was my home. Moving to Vancouver has not been an easy feat for me – but more about this some other time!
Extremely lucky for me – I happened to visit during the beginning of one of the coldest winters in Toronto! Upwards of 65 cm of snow have been reported, but the snow has never stopped me before. On my birthday, I happily did what an ideal day would be for me – a billion errands within a small span of time. How I love efficiency and walking around my old home! While I was waiting for dearest Robin to get off work, I busied myself with hot yoga (with Diana!), a hair cut, much required RMT appointment, little birthday coffee treat, as well as beauty pick ups while I was in Toronto.
As for the week itself – I was genuinely touched by the number of people who persevered through the snow to spend a few hours with me. These friends showing up for me time and time again reminded me constantly of the growth I have gone through; and are a kind reminder of the stark contrast that used to be my friend group in high school. Every doodle in the birthday cards reminded me of the person I have become and will continue to strive to be. As well, every inside joke reminding me of the genuine, meaningful connections I have with those I have shared my life with. Oh how lucky I am!
26 was a great year, and I’m excited for the year 27 will be. I know 17 year old me would be so proud we got here!
